Ret. Program Analyst for Secretary of Defense

Mr. Frank Anthony Andy, age 88, died Friday, February 12, 2010, at INOVA Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, VA.

A son of the late Giuseppe Andy and Agatha Pizzuto, Mr. Andy was born on April 14, 1921 in Morgantown, WV, where he grew up and later graduated Phi Beta Kappa from West Virginia University.

Mr. Andy served his country honorably in the United States Navy during WWII. On June 11, 1944, then Chief Petty Officer Andy was wounded during the Normandy invasion off the coast of France. He was subsequently awarded the Purple Heart medal.

After his military service, Mr. Andy was employed as a civilian Program Analyst with the Office of the Secretary of Defense, newly established by the Department of Defense in 1947 to unify the Departments of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. For over 34 years, Mr. Andy worked in an organization devoted to coordinating the Research and Development programs of the three Services under fourteen different Secretaries of Defense. He was awarded the Secretary of Defense Meritorious Civilian Service Award when he retired in 1980.

Mr. Andy is survived by his wife of 63 years, Norma Louise Callihan Andy; his son, Steven Michael Andy; his daughter, Cyndi Andy Lee; and his two granddaughters, Amber Alena Davis and Tiffany Lea Davis.

Friends may call the Loudoun Funeral Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday, February 22, 2010. Funeral service and interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Monday, February 22, 2010.
