Obituary:
Nelson Bennett III, 87 years old of Lovettsville, Virginia
On January 24, 2010, Nelson Bennett III of Lovettsville, VA fell asleep in the Lord from congestive heart failure. He was born on February 13, 1923 to the late Lt. Col. Nelson Bennett II and Rose Bernice Bennett (nee Pinkstaff) at the Columbia Hospital for Women in Washington, DC. At the age of six, his family moved from Washington, DC to the Brookmont neighborhood of Bethesda, MD where he spent much of his life.
After graduating from Woodward Preparatory in Washington, DC and serving his country in the US Army during World War II, Mr. Bennett earned a Bachelors of Science degree from the University of Maryland.
He was a lifelong federal civil servant and retired in 1986 from the U.S. Department of Energy as its Director of Budget and Administration for the Policy Division. Throughout his life, but especially during his retirement years, he was an avid golfer, numismatist and enjoyed international travel with his family He also spent many of his retirement years working for former Congresswoman Connie Morella of the 8th Federal Congressional District of Maryland.
He is survived by two sons, Nelson Bennett IV of Bethesda, MD and David S. (Veronika M.) Bennett of Lovettsville, VA; grandsons Nicholas J.B. and Andrew R.B. Bennett of Lovettsville, VA; sister Emily F.J.
Bennett of Bethesda, MD; his former wife Mary Lou Bennett of Lansdowne, VA; stepdaughters Carole J. Zoellner of Scottsdale, AZ and Heidi M. Daniels of Las Vegas, NV; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and lifelong friends the Lee-Thompson family. He was preceded in death by sisters Mary Elizabeth Bennett Hargett and Dorothy Jane Bennett.
A requiem mass will be said at St. David's Episcopal Church in Washington, DC on February 13, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. The family will then receive guests at Kenwood Golf and Country Club in Bethesda, MD.
A private interment will take place in the family cemetery in Pinkstaff, Illinois.
